MELVIN N. GARNER, 51, died 8 Feb 1955 in a Challis [Idaho] hospital. Services in Soda Springs 11 Feb. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. He was born in Tooele, Utah 3 Sept 1903 the son of William M. Garner & Susanna Martin Garner. He never married [One of two obituaries shown]

MELVIN N. GARNER died 9 Feb 1955 at Challis [Idaho] hospital. Born ? He was orphaned at an early age – He never married. Buried in Fairview Cemetery in Soda. [Two of two obituaries shown]

DAVID K. MCLEAN, 81, died 10 Feb 1955 at his home in Soda Springs. He was born 9 July 1874 at Meadowville, Bear Lake, Idaho. He married Mary Lamborn in 1908 in S.L. Temple. He came to Soda in 1905. Funeral 14 Feb 1955 in Soda. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda. Survivors – his wife, one daughter Mrs. Eunice Gunnell, one brother George McLean & a sister Mrs. Margaret Clifford.

MAURICE BAIR died 12 Feb 1955 in San Diego, Calif, survived by his wife Mrs. Mamie Andersen Bair. Born in Richmond, Utah 1903. He married Mamie Andersen in Soda Springs 1 Aug 1925. Funeral 15 Feb in San Diego. Burial in Greenwood Memorial Park [in San Diego]. Also surviving are a son, Dale and daughter Mrs. Bonnie Apher.

GRANT LEROY WALLENTINE, 42, was killed 23 Feb [1955] at the Conda [Idaho] mines. He was born in Paris, Idaho 23 April 1913 the son of William & Bertha Walentine. Survivors – his widow LaVern, a dau Lynette, his parents, 4 brothers – Rex J., Russell W., Lewis C. , & Earl D.; five sisters Mrs. Alton (Wilma) Jackson, Mrs. F. C. (Leda) Bentsen, Mrs. Keith (Loda) Nelson, Mrs. Del Mar (Joyce) Johnson, Mrs. Blake (Norma) Jensen. Funeral 27 Feb at Conda. Burial in Logan [Utah] Cemetery.

JOHN THORNOCK, 27,died 2 March 1955 of a gun shot wound. Born 16 March 1927 at Bloomington [Idaho] the son of Joseph Ralph & Lucy Perkins Thornock. He married Nola Knowles. Survived by mother, his widow, 2 children. Burial in Bancroft Cemetery.

ERNEST A. HOPKINS died 12 March 1955 in Pocatello [Idaho]. He was 39 yrs old. He was born 29 May 1915 at Soda Springs, son of Samuel & Rosina Reber Hopkins. He married Margaret Woodworth 11 Feb 1939. They had two children, Judith Ann 15 &* Wayne 11. Survivors, his wife & two children, six sisters, Violet Coursmerith, Ethel Crump, Iris Neff, Milda Rendelman, Edith Ford, & Jeanette Brecht. One brother A. R. Hopkins. Another sister Elida Stock preceded him in death. Funeral 16 March in Pocatello. Burial in Mountain View Cemetery [Pocatello].

VANCE T. LAKEY, 78, died in Nampa [Idaho] Apr. or March 1955.[some records show Feb 1955] He was born 24 Oct 1876 in Elna, N. C. He was married 18 April 1902 in Soda Springs to Anna Nelson. Survivors his wife Anna, Joe, Wallace, Floyd, Frank and Kenneth Lakey; four daughters, E. B. Glenn, Mrs. Merrill Hendry, Mrs. Alvin Vavra, Mrs. Leon McGinnis; two brothers, Charles & Jesse Lakey, a sister Mrs. Alice Burchfield. Funeral & Burial in Nampa.

DAHL LAYNE BENNETT, 15, Lago [Idaho] died in Nampa [Idaho] April 1955. Funeral 8 April 1955. Burial in Lago Cemetery. He was born 25 April 1940 in Soda Springs a son of Roe T. And Norma Nielsen Bennett.

MRS. MELETHA “CHAT” VIAS, 62, died at her home in Wayan [Idaho] 4 April 1955. Funeral in Soda Springs 8 April. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda. Born in Mendota, Mo. 28 Aug 1892 the dau of William E. Dray and Amanda Graham Dray. She had a twin sister Kate. She married Frank D. Layland at Smoot, Wyo. 28 May 1916. One son Rex was born there. Mr. Layland died 1920 with the flu. Later Mrs. Layland married Isaac Vias in Paris, Ida. This couple had one son who died at birth. Mr. Vias had three teen age sons by a previous marriage, Oscar, Roy & Alfred. Mrs. Matt Stoor died a few days after giving birth to a son & before her death she gave the baby to Mrs. Vias. He was named Frank Reed Stoor. Her sister Kate or Mrs. Glen Bush died in 1936 & her daughter Betty Rae lived with the Vias (sic) until her marriage. Survivors – two sons, three stepsons, her niece Betty and a sister Mrs. Cecil Sibbett – several grandchildren.

E PARLEY SMITH died in Caribou Hospital 7 April 1955. He was born 22 May 1896 son of George & Mary Ellen Smith of Thatcher [Idaho]. He married Lillie Barton 15 Aug 1928. Burial in Thatcher.

MRS. CAROLINE MARIAN DORAN EASTMAN, 90, died 21 April 1955 in Soda Springs. Funeral 24 April in Soda. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda. She was born 2 Feb 1865 in Salt Lake City a daughter of Hugh Thomas & Phoebe Williams Doran. She married Landi C. Eastman in Logan 5 Oct 1885. Mr. Eastman died 7 Dec 1933. Survivors – 2 daughters, Mrs. Uther Davis, Mrs. Uther Davis, Mrs. Marguerite Weinberg, a son R. Darton Eastman.

WILLIAM MAHAN TOMLINSON, 37, died 24 April 1955 at Bethesda, Naval Hospital in Wash. D.C. He was born Feb 1818 at the OX ranch now Nelson Hogan (sic). Survivors, His wife Phyllis, a dau Suzanne 8, two sons William 6 & Richard 2, a brother Edmund, a sister Margaret Barrison & his mother Mrs. Celestine West Tomlinson. FRANK E. MAGUINESS, a former Soda Springs resident died at his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa 23 April 1955. He was born in Soda Springs 26 Oct 1883 the son of Edward B & Synthia St. Clair Maguiness. Survivors – his wife Mary and a son Richard. Funeral in Council Bluffs. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Council Bluffs.

RUSSELL M. PANTING, 68, died 16 May 1955 in Hamilton, Mont. hospital. Funeral 20 May 1955 in Soda Springs. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda. He was born in Soda Springs 28 Dec 1887, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Christopher Panting. He was married to Lettie Thirkill 4 Jan 1912. She died 13 Nov 1943. Survivors – two sons Howard & S. MISS JENNIE MCCLELLAN, 66, died 24 May 1955 in San Jose, Calif. hospital. She was the daughter of Washington & Sarah Quigley McClellan. Survivors – 4 sisters & three brothers: Mrs. Henry Blaser, Mrs. Fannie Higginson, Mrs. George Haslam, Mrs. Parley Lloyd, Raymond, John, & Jesse.

MRS. CELELIA l. SMITH, 63, died 7 June 1955 in Salt Lake [Utah] hospital. Burial 10 June 1955 in Soda Springs. She was born 19 Sept 1891 in Parker, Idaho dau of Augusta & Maria Smith Short. She married Ernest H. Smith in Salt Lake Temple 17 June 1908. Survivors – her husband, a son G. Heber Smith, a daughter, Mrs. Florence Parrish, a brother Alma W. Short.

JAMES CARYLE BUDROW, 80, died in Ogden, Utah 2 Aug 1955. Funeral in Bancroft [Idaho] 6 Aug. Burial in Soda Springs Cemetery. Survivors – four daughters, Delilah Budrow, Genevieve Powell, Marjorie Shipley & Mildred Creer. He was born 9 Sept 1874 in Rochester, New York Jan 5, 1905. He married Emma Davis. Mrs. Budrow preceeded (sic) him in death.

MRS. MARGARET BEE HAYES, 69, died in Soda Springs 14 Aug 1955. She was born 7 Jan 1886 at Bloomington [Idaho] to William A. and Mary Haddock Bee. She married Thomas Hayes 27 March 1905. Survivors, her husband, four daughters & two sons, Mrs. Leon (Mary) Bollar, Mrs. John (Agnes) Que Nelson, Mrs. Lee (Marvel) Nelson, Mrs. Frank (Phyllis) Kunz, Rulon B. Hayes & Thomas R. Hayes. MRS. CAROLINE PAUL DAVIDS, 75, died in Chesterfield [Idaho] 17 Aug 1955. She was born 28 Jan 1880 at Cornwall Parish, England a dau of John & Elizabeth Richards Paul. She married Chester (Chet) Davids in Logan Temple 28 Sept 1898. RICHARD WYCOFF LAU, 45, died 4 Sept 1955 in Soda Springs. He was born 12 Sept 1909 in Soda Springs to D. J. and Sarah May Rose Lau. He married Nathel Poulsen 5 March 1939 at Randolph, Utah. STEPHEN OLIVER DONOVAN, 87, died at the home of his dau Mrs. H. B. Hayes in Bancroft [Idaho] 14 Sept 1955. He was born 1 Sept 1868 in County Cork, Ireland a son of Timothy & Ann Donovan. He married Elizabeth Fitzgerald at Shoshone [Idaho] 1 Oct 1893. She died at Orange, Calif 15 Aug 1944. Survivors, his daughter Mrs. Hayes and a son Raymond T. Donovan. Funeral 17 Sept in Bancroft, Idaho. Burial in Bancroft Cemetery.

MRS. JOSIE BURCHFIELD HILDRETH, 60, died 15 Sept 1955 at Soda Springs. She was born at Townsend, Tenn. 7 Dec 1894. She married William S. Hildreth at Soda Springs 1 July 1914. He died 13 Jan 1939. Survivors – 4 sons, Lambert W. Hildreth, LaViel J. Hildreth, Lavern F. Hildreth & Carrol J. Hildreth; 2 daughters, Mrs. West (Faye) Evans, Mrs. Val (Myrle) Steele, her mother Mrs. Alice Burchfield; a sister Mrs. Nellie Burchett, three brothers George, Vance & John Burchfield. WILLIAM THOMAS LLOYD, 77, died 21 Sept 1955 in Logan, Utah. His wife Sarah Myers Lloyd died 1949 & he later married Grace Harris. Funeral 24 Sept in Wellsville [Utah]. Burial in Wellsville. ELIZABETH LARSEN MCCORDA, 84, died 22 Sept 1955 at Selah, Washington. She was born 9 Jan 1871 the dau of Joseph & Mary Coult. She married Neil Larsen in 1890. He died 1914 at Grace [Idaho]. She then married Nels McCorda in 1921 in Pocatello [Idaho]. He died in Yakima, Wash. in 1945. Survivors – two sons, Albert Larsen & Kenneth Larsen – five daughters, Mrs. George (Pearl) Hamp, Mrs. Ollie Thomas, Mrs. Mabel Reese, Mrs. Willis (Edith) Wright, Mrs. Laverne Anderson. GEORGE ALMA HOGAN, 67, died 26 Oct 1955 at Thatcher, Idaho. He was born 2 July 1888, son of Ira & Harriet Harris Hogan. He married Suzanne Phoebe Spillman 29 May 1892 in Logan, Temple. Survivors – his widow, a daughter & three sons, Mrs. Dorothy Jarrard, Gary O., Don, Wawn, & Dean Hogan. He was an uncle of Phyllis Marriott. Burial?

JAMES DAGGETT, 68, died 27 Oct 1955 in Soda Springs. Funeral 30 Oct and burial in Soda Springs Cemetery. He was born 29 May 1887 at Blue Mound, Kansas a son of William & Mary Daggett. He married Opal Goodwin at Eureka, Kans. 16 Nov 1926. Survivors – his widow, two sons, James Kiley and John Robert, five daughters, Mrs. Kay Lau (Dorothy), Mrs. Ben (Patsy) Ashley, Capitola, Clarabelle and Betty Lau & three brothers. One son Billy preceded him in death.

FRANK CLAY CRAIG, 64, died 31 Oct 1955 in Soda Springs. He was born 7 July 1891 in Missouri, a son of Samuel H. and Hallie Sorrels Craig. Survived by two sons, Charles C. and Eugene Craig. Funeral in Memphis [Tennessee] and Burial in Rosehill Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was born in Hartford, Conn. 23 May 1891 a son of Eric and Anna Lisa Bradford (sic) [Branford]. He married Mrs. Mae Duback 14 Nov 1945. His parents & brother Oscar preceded him in death. MRS. MARY CALKINS MCGAVIN, 78, died 20 Nov [1955] in Idaho Falls [Idaho] hospital. She was born in Harrisville, Utah 28 Oct 1877 a dau of William F. and Lucinda Elizabeth Rawson Owen. She married Orsen B. Calkins 24 March 1896. Mr. Calkins died 27 Sept 1948. She then married Roland McGavin 12 March 1952. Survivors her husband & sons & daus. William O. Calkins, Albert H. Calkins, Mrs. Dewey (Pearl) Skinner, Mrs. John (LeNora) Piper, Mrs. W. B. CHARLES JOB (JIGGS) NICHOLS, 80, died 24 Nov 1955 in Soda Springs. He was born in Crewkern, England 12 June 1875. He never married. Services 28 Nov in Soda. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs. He came to U.S. with his mother and seven of his brothers & sisters.

JOHN WILLIAM DEGRANGE, died [Nov or Dec] 1955. Funeral 3 Dec 1955 in Soda. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda. He was born in Greentop, Mo. 8 Sept 1886. He had one sister, Myrtle Lavena Bowan Marler who preceded him in death 27 May 1955. Surviving three half-brothers and six half-sisters.

ZENN GEORGE BARGER, 35, died 11 Dec 1955 in Soda Springs from an accident. Born to Samuel J. and Lillie Purser Barger, at Red Rock near Downey, Idaho 16 March 1920. He married Illa Munro 15 Nov 1943 in Soda Springs. A son Ray was born 30 Sept 1950. Survivors – his wife, a son Wayne Ray Barger, his father Samuel J. & the following brothers & sisters, William J., Delos R., Dell Dinsdale, June Pike, Gwen Brown. He was preceded in death by his mother. Funeral 14 Dec. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda.

MRS. ANNA ELIZA STONES, 87, died 14 Dec 1955 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mont Norton. Body was taken to Preston [Idaho] for burial.

MAYOR AARON LESLIE OZBURN died 20 Dec 1955 in Soda Springs. Born near Yates, Kansas 30 April 1897, the son of Joseph Henry & Anna Eliza Ozburn. 6 Jun 1918 Aaron married Hazel Hawkes of Pocatello [Idaho]. They had three children – Joseph Leslie, Mrs. Kay (Betty) Gorton & Harry Dean, he is also survived by a sister Mrs. Harry Richards. Funeral 23 Dec. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda

CRAIG ASHBAKER died 20 Dec [1955] in Pocatello hospital from a hunting accident. He is the son of Mrs. Mildred Ashbaker. He was born 11 April 1943 at Logan, Utah son of W. Lloyd & Mildred Corbett Ashbaker. Surviving his mother, a brother Neil 16; his father died five years ago. Funeral 23 Dec in Bannock Stake house at Grace [Idaho]. Burial ?

REESE DUBOIS GORTON died 22 Dec 1955 in Soda Springs at age of 64. Funeral 26 Dec. Born in Soda Springs 3 Jan 1891, a son of George W. & Leah Waylett Gorton. Survivors – his widow, a son Henry Clay, two daughters Gayla Christensen & Patricia Black, two brothers, Ralph, his twin, & Kenneth Gorton; five sisters & 3 brothers preceded him in death. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda.

GARY CONDER SMOOT, 19, died 11 Jan 1956 from a car accident near Provo, Utah. He died in the hospital (Provo, I think). Funeral 14 Jan 1956 in the L.D.S. Edgemont Ward near the Almstead plant of Provo. Gary was born at the Oneida Plant in Preston, Idaho 6 July 1936 to Phyllis Worthen & Conder E. Smoot. Burial in Provo City Cemetery

RICHARD GRANT SIMONS, 33, died [at Ephrata, Wash.] 2 Aug 1959. Funeral 7 July (sic) [August] 1959 in Soda. Burial in Fairview Cemetery. Born 11 Nov 1925 at Soda Springs to Ernest Tucker Simons & Goldie Fontella Sibbett.

CELIA EVA CALL, 71, died 3 Aug 1959 at Pocatello [Idaho]. She was born 2 July 1884 at Kaysville, Utah to Samuel H. & Martha Raymond Hart. She married William Wiley Call 1904 in S. L. Temple. He preceeded (sic) her in death. Surviving – a son Wiley H. Call, a brother, C. H. Hart. Funeral in Soda 6 Aug 1959. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.

MILTON STEVEN WALLACE, 4, died 14 Aug 1959 at S. L. City [Utah) hospital. He was born 5 Aug 1955 at Soda Springs to bill & Nita Bowman Wallace. JOSEPH ARCHIBALD JOHNSON, 53, died 20 Aug 1959 at Grace [Idaho]. He was born 26 May 1906 at Colorado to Robert & Eliza Delana Jack Johnson. He married Dortha Wood Madsen – (later div). He married Agnes Biorn of Paris, Idaho 13 Oct 1818, later solemnized in Logan Temple. IDA KACKLEY, 87, died 7 Oct 1959 in Long Beach, Calif. Born 18 May 1872 at Bedford, Indiana to Mr. & Mrs. Sam Sarver. She married Dr. Ellis Kackley 1893. Survived by one son, Evan M. Kackley. Funeral 10 Oct in Long Beach. Her ashes will be interred in Caribou County.

JESSE KING JENSEN, 61, died 29 Nov 1959 at Soda. He was born 10 June 1898 at Afton, Wyo. to James H. & Susan Wilbur Jensen. He married Florence Cozier 20 June 1925 at Paris, Ida. MARTHA JANE BYINGTON REED, 88, died 9 Dec 1959 at Poplar [?]. She was born 25 May 1872 at Nine Mile (now Downey) [Idaho] to Joseph Henry & Hannah Malland Byington. She married Frank A. Reed 27 Nov 1894. He died 1937, also a son Frank Reed, Jr. died 1952. Survivors, a brother. Funeral 12 Dec 1959 at Rigby. Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs.

CHRISTOPHER T. WOODALL, 72. died 14 Dec 1959 at [Twin Falls, Idaho]. Born 15 Jan 1887 in Soda Springs to Christopher F and Ellen Doyle Woodall. He married Leah Sterrett in Nov. 1912. She died 1915 leaving a one daughter. He later married Eva Dobbs 11 June 1937. Funeral services 17 Dec in Twin Falls. Burial in the Fairview Cemetery in Soda Springs. Survivors – his widow, a daughter, Gwenevere Woodall, three sons, Jerry, Larry & Ronald, a step daughter LaDene Hancey, a brother Wallace Woodall & a sister Mrs. J. I. Gulick.
