DOUGLAS DEATON, 16 yrs, died 18 Jan 1940 at Soda Springs. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. A. B. Deaton. Funeral services 21 Jan 1940. Douglas Gale Deaton was born 13 March 1924 in Soda Springs. Survived by his parents, A.B. Deaton, Sr. & Lillie Deaton, 5 brothers, Delmer E. Deaton, Albert B. Deaton, Jr., Perry G. Deaton, William Pierce Deaton, Blaine Deaton, 3 sisters Mrs. Ruth Walton, Miss Opal Deaton and Blanche Deaton.

CHARLES G. FULTON died 29 Jan 1940 at Los Angeles, Calif. Survived by two brothers, Thomas H. Fulton & Alfred Fulton. He worked at Conda mines for 20 yrs. Funeral 2 Feb 1940 in Tacoma, Washington.

MRS. BURR FIELDS of Holliday, Mo. died 30 Jan 1940. Survived by husband, one daughter Edna and a granddaughter, also two sisters and a brother, Dr. Hollingsworth.

MRS HEPHZIBAH LEAVITT, 63 yrs old, wife of Henry Leavitt died at Auburn, Wyo. 1 Feb 1940. She was the mother of Del Leavitt of Soda. Surviving, her husband, Del and Amil Leavitt, a daughter Nethie Walton.

MRS. DORA CATES WINSCHELL died 2 Feb 1940. Funeral 6 Feb 1940 in Soda. Dora Cates Winschell was born 7 Sept 1864 in Salem, Missouri. She married William Winschell 1880 at Fort Benton, Montana. Mr. Winschell died 1930. They lived at Henry [Idaho], Survivors include 3 sons Harry, Lewis & Lester Winschell; five daughters, Vella Billingsley, Elva Skinner, Gadys (sic) Knowlden, Letta Burroughs and Arzella Nourse.

CHRIS LUND died 3 Feb 1940. Chris lived alone around Soda for 50 yrs. Christian P. Lund was born 9 Jan 1868 in Denmark. He has one brother living, Charles Lund of Idaho Falls [Idaho], several nephews & nieces. Funeral 4 Feb in Soda, Burial in Soda Cemetery. Unmd [Unmarried]. Relatives from out of town who attended funeral: Mr. & Mrs. Charles Lund & family, Mr. & Mrs. Eli Lund of Conda [Idaho], Mrs. Sophronia Roelle of Pocatello [Idaho]

STEPHEN D. GRIMM, “The Sagebrush Doctor” died [Feb] 1940. Born at Canton, Illinois in 1860. He married Sarah Read in 1883 in Concordia [Illinois?]. Funeral 9 Feb 1940 at Kelly & Bancroft [Idaho]. Survivors- his widow, Sarah Read (Grimm), four boys & three girls, Mattie McRae, Watson E. Grimm, Mrs. Nellie McDaniel, Walter Grimm, Lulu Newland, D. W. Grimm & Melvin Grimm. He came to Bancroft section in 1911; lived in Kelly [Idaho]

KENNETH PETERSON died 15 Feb 1940 in a Salt Lake City [Utah] hospital. He was born 2 Oct 1903 at Mink Creek [Idaho] a son of Emil & Matilda Peterson. He married Ruth Pierce in 1923. Survivors – his widow, a daughter & three sons, Colleen, Keith, K. Lynn, & Glenn Peterson; three brothers, Harold, Donald & Farrell. Funeral in Grace [Idaho] 18 Feb 1940.

MRS. LIZZIE MASON UNDERWOOD died at Payette, Ida 26 Feb 1940. She was born in Como, Ill. 12 June 1856. She married John L. Underwood 12 Feb 1874. She moved to Idaho, first to Paris [Idaho], then Soda Springs (1880-1886) & Montpelier [Idaho]. They lost their two oldest children (two boys) with diphtheria. Mr. Underwood died 14 Feb 1914 and was buried in Soda beside his two boys. Mrs. Underwood had many distinguished ancestors. One was Col. William Turner who had been active in forming the first law-making body of the Thirteen Original States. She was also a kinsman of Dr. Marcus Whitman, a pioneer missionary doctor who was credited with saving the Oregon Territory for the U.S. Three of her four children preceeded (sic) her in death. Two sons, Phillip and Frank died in infancy, a daughter Mrs. Esther Marks died in Los Angles (sic), [California] in 1936. Survivors: one daughter, Mrs. Bernard Eastman, three grandsons, Boyd Mark, Phillip Eastman & Bernard Eastman, Jr.; two brothers, Henry B. Whitman of Montpelier and Edwin D. Whitman of Soda Springs and a sister, Mrs. Carrie B. Lane. The body was brought to Soda Springs for burial 29 Feb.

WILLIAM F. RUBY, 68, died in Pocatello [Idaho] hospital 28 Feb 1940. Born in Green River, Wyo. His wife, Mrs. Ann Hill Ruby died here in 1928, Survivors: five sons & daughters, George, Francis & Beatrice Ruby of Pocatello, James Ruby of Hawaii, Mrs. Manuel S. Sylvia of Calif. & Eva Ruby of Calif, a step son Alvin H. Grimm. William for years lived with his mother, Aunt Sadie Ruby across Soda Creek from the power plant. Buried in Soda 1 March 1940.

NANCY ANN ELLIS NANNEY, age 81, sister of Frank and George Ellis of Soda & mother of Mrs. Alice Stiles of Conda [Idaho] died 6 March 1940 at the home of a son in Los Angeles [California]. She was born at St. Maries, Mo. 5 June 1858 & was married to Isaac Wood Nanney at Perryville, Mo. in May 1876. Survived by eight sons & daughters: Sylvester, Charles & George Nanney of Los Angeles, William Nanney of Bakersfield [California], Ivan Nanney, Jay Nanney, Mrs. Mable Dassett & Mrs. Alice Stiles. Mrs. Nanney was the oldest of a family of eight and is the fifth to pass away. Still surviving are two brothers, George & Frank Ellis & a sister Mrs. William Wright. The family first settled in Bench, Ida, then came to Soda & homesteaded on the place now known as McConkie ranch. Mr. Nanney died 20 yrs ago. Funeral services were held in Pocatello [Idaho] 10 March 1940.

JOHN HENRY BYINGTON, brother of Mrs. Martha Reed of Alexander [Idaho] died at a Pocatello [Idaho] hospital 9 March 1940. He was born in Huntsville, Utah 20 Sept 1864.

LYMAN JENKINS, 13 month old son of Mrs. Don Jenkins died 14 March 1940. Funeral in Grace [Idaho] 16 March 1940. Don Jenkins, the child’s father, died in January.

BENDIX NIELSON, died 14 March 1940 at the hospital in Soda Springs. Funeral 17 March in Soda. He was born in Denmark 7 Feb 1880. 1906 he married Carrie Olsen of Brigham City [Utah] in Malad [Idaho].

Survived by: his widow & the following children, Mrs. Erma Pickering, Norma, Ray, Ferrell, Orland, Melba & Sterling. Another son Homer died as a result of an accident in 1929. Buried in Soda

MR. ALF TAYLOR, died either March or April 1940. Funeral service was either 28 March or 4 April 1940 at Thatcher [Idaho]. He was brought to Soda Springs for burial.

LYMAN HEMMERT, age 52, died at his home in Idaho Falls [Idaho] 29 March 1940. Services held 2 April in Idaho Falls. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery [in Idaho Falls]

MRS. JULIA A. WHITTLE POND, 81, died at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah 23 April 1940. She was born 15 Jan 1859 in Grantsville [Utah], a daughter of Casper and Mary Ann Harris Whittle. She married Lewis S. Pond 1879. Survivors three sons, L. Sumner Pond, Dr. C. W. Pond, Joseph M. Pond; six daughter, Mrs. Flora Wright, Mrs. Myrtle Turner, Mrs. Clare Bergstrom, Mrs. Eugenia Dean, Mrs. Teresa Dunn, Mrs. Abigail Gardner, two brothers, Aroet Whittle, Fred Whittle; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Merrill, Mrs. Maude Stoddard, Mrs. Emily Robinson. Burial in Richmond [Utah] Cemetery 25 April 1940.

GARY DEAN SOMSEN, age 1 yr 10 mo. of Grays Lake [Idaho] died (of poisoned (sic)) 27 April 1940. Funeral 28 April 1940. He is the son of Earl & Ree Walton Somsen.

LOUISA E. CORBETT, 78, widow of Joseph E. Corbett, died at the home of a daughter at Logan, Utah. Services held 3 May in Bancroft [Idaho]. She was born at Bountiful [Utah] 10 Feb 1862 a daughter of William O. and Fanny Burgess Gorringe. Her husband died in 1922. Survivors: seven sons & daughters:

NORMA NESSEN TAYLOR, 23, wife of Glen Robert Taylor died at a Brigham City [Utah] hospital 2 May 1940. She was born in Howell, Utah 10 Jan 1917 to Nephi and Barbara Ellen Wildman Nessen. She married Mr. Taylor eight yrs ago [1932].

MRS. SELMA REED PANTING, 83, died May 1940. Mrs. Panting was born in London, England 21 June 1857. She came to America with her parents at the age of 4. She married Christopher Panting in 1879. They homesteaded north of town. Mr. Panting died in 1929. Mrs. Panting was the mother of eleven children, eight of whom survive: Mrs. Frances Hudson, Mrs. Eva Rehm, Mrs. Dora Beus, Russell Panting, Dell Panting, Mrs. Zella McClellan, Mrs. Rita Burgin, Chris Panting; also a sister Mrs. Annette Snyder & two brothers, Ben Reed & E. B. Reed. The children who preceeded (sic) their mother in death were Myrtle, died at age 2 of diphtheria, Mrs. Elizabeth Hodley and Worthing Panting. Funeral services 12 May 1940 in Soda Springs.

MRS. RUTH MARIE ATKINSON STRACHAN, 84, widow of James Strachan, died 18 May 1940 in Soda Springs, Idaho. Ruth Marie Atkinson Strachan was born 15 Nov 1855 at Balmoral, Ontario, Canada to Ann B. & William Atkinson. On 15 Oct 1878 she married James Strachan. Survivors: son A. C. Strachan, a daughter Bernice Pickren, a sister Mrs. David Jepson, a brother Wallace W. Atkinson, 4 grandchildren, Mrs. Marie Evans, J. Fred Pickren, James P. & Burnell Strachan.

CHARLES BETTISON WILSON, age 85, lacking one month, died 21 May 1940 at Soda Springs hospital. Mr. Wilson born in Scotland at Howden, Wallsend, New Castle-on-Tyne 15 Jun 1855. Survivors: a daughter Mrs. Jeanie Marie LeBailly of Pocatello [Idaho] & six grandchildren: Mrs. Bernadette McMonigla, Mrs. Gwen Prusincquiscki. Marguerite Scott, Mrs. Ilene Sanford, Lieut. E. B. LeBailly & Miss Rita Jean LeBailly; also by a sister Mrs. Sarah McCrea, age 95. Funeral 23 May 1940 at Soda Springs. Burial in Soda

ELLIS LUND, son of the late Peter and Ellen Lund died in Arbon, Calif. 22 May 1940. Funeral & burial 29 May 1940 in Soda Springs, Idaho. He was born 8 Dec 1908 in Soda Springs, Idaho. Survivors: following sisters & brothers: Mrs. Ella C. Ensign, of Salt Lake [Utah], Mrs. Lafrane Richelle, Pocatello [Idaho], Mrs. Anne Scott, Boise [Idaho], Mrs. Mary Olsen, Nevada, Mrs. Grace Yarnell, Calif. and Eli Lund, Montpelier [Idaho].

DAN CROSS, 51, died 26 May 1940 at the Soda Springs hospital. He was born in Lincolnshire, England 24 April 1889. He married Louise Ivory 30 Jun 1915. Survivors: his wife, eight children, Mrs. Catherine Moore, Mrs. Florence Holden, Bill, Ted, Ada & Ralph Cross, all of Soda. Mrs. June Pasco, Calif., Mrs. Ethel Caress, Conda [Idaho], four grandchildren, one brother & three sisters in Eng. Funeral 29 May 1940. Burial in the Fairview Cemetery.

HAROLD HAVERCAST died [May] 1940 in the waters off Ellis Island [New York]. He was in the Marine Hospital on a steamer off Ellis Island. He was buried 1 June in the Marine Cemetery on Ellis Island.

JOSEPH (JOE) H. DEWITT, 66, died 19 June 1940 at Rupert, Idaho. He was born 1 Sept 1873 at Ottawa, Kansas. He was publisher of Soda Springs Chieftain abt 30 yrs ago. While here he married Mrs. Perdette Merrell Locke. He married (2) Minnie Nelson 15 May 1920. Survivors: his widow Mrs. Minnie Nelson DeWitt, one daughter from a former marriage Gladys Serile & several stepchildren. [Buried in Rupert, I think]

WENDELL WESTERBERG died 24 June 1940 at the Soda Springs Hospital. Funeral 27 June 1940 in Grace, Idaho.

A BABY SON was born 21 June 1940 to Mr. & Mrs. Clyde Spackman. It lived seven hours and died 21 June 1940 [in Soda]

MRS, ELVA MYRTLE WINSCHELL SKINNER died [in Soda] 28 June 1940. Funeral 30 June 1940 in Soda Springs; burial Soda. Mrs. Skinner was born 12 Sept 1891 to William & Dora Winschell. She married William J. Skinner at Grays Lake [Idaho] 10 Dec 1911. Survivors, her husband, a daughter, Bernice Woodall & 4 step children, Mrs. Vera Hayes, Dewey, Theodore Skinner, Mrs. Melva Crossley.

UDEAN YOST, 9, dau of Mr. & Mrs. Fred Yost died 29 June 1940 (electrocution). She was born 30 Dec 1930 at Bancroft [Idaho]. Survivors; her parents, nine brothers & sisters, Mrs. Elton Brown, Thad O. Yost, Glen F., Date E. Lois, Erma, Nelda, Ila Rae and Ranee and a grandfather J. B. Humphreys of Utah. [funeral & burial at Bancroft [Idaho]]

MRS. ANN STELLA PHILLIPS KYNASTON, 65, widow of John Kynaston of Bancroft [Idaho] died 27 June 1940 or 4 July 1940 [Note: both of these dates are incorrect. Mrs. Kynaston died 25 June 1940] at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Winona Cole of Ogden, Utah. Mrs. Kynaston was born 2 Feb 1875 in Hilliard, Wyo. a dau of Thomas & Esther Dille Phillips. She married John Kynaston 30 March 1892. Survivors: three sons, Merlin J. Kynaston, Edward T. Kynaston, Raymond E. Kynaston, seven daughters, Mrs. Darleen Cornellison (sic), Mrs. Ruth Anderson, Mrs. Pearl Case, Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Emily Parks, Mrs. Ruby Gunnell, Mrs. Lola Lloyd; three brothers, Thomas, Hugh & Ray Phillips, two sisters, Mrs. Maud Husband, Mrs. Lillian Tobin.

MARGARET SHULER HANSEN, 20, dau of Mr. & Mrs. George Shuler & wife of Gerald Hansen died 5 July 1940. She was born in Soda Springs, 21 Aug 1920. She married Gerald Hansen 10 Feb 1937. Survivors: her husband, a two yr old daughter Geraldine; her parents, George & Iva Tipton Shuler, two brothers, George Junior & Don Shuler. Funeral (and burial) 8 July 1940

GEORGE SCHMIDT, 73, a resident of Caribou County for 52 yrs died 28 July 1940 from a heart ailment. He was born in Ettingen, Germany 25 May 1867 to John & Eva Margaret Benz Schmidt. Funeral 30 July 1940. Burial Soda Springs. Survivors, two nieces, Louise and Hilda Vollweiler, a nephew, Henry Vollweiler & family.

CHARLES H. BASSETT, 86, died 31 July 1940 at his farm home in Lago, Idaho. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on 4 March 1854 to Mr. & Mrs. Charles H. Bassett. He married Mary Lee 1875 in Tooele, Utah. She died Jan 1929. Survivors, seven sons & daughters, Harold H., Don H., & Willis L. Bassett of Lago, Fred G. Bassett of Pocatello [Idaho], Mrs. C.D. Murray, Mrs. Hattie Sainbrook, Mrs. Earl Knudsen, also a brother Fred C. Bassett.

GEORGE P. JORGENSEN died 9 Aug 1940 at his home. He was born in Gunnison, Utah 26 Sept 1882, a son of Peter & Edvardine Harr Jorgensen. Services 13 Aug 1940. Burial in Soda Springs. Survivors: a brother Nels Jorgensen (sic) & family and a sister Hannah Jensen.

GILBERT AUSTIN, 43, died 22 Aug 1940 [by lightening (sic)] at the head of Elk Creek near the Wyo. line. Services 27 Aug 1940 in Soda Springs. Burial in the Fairview Cemetery. He was the son of Thomas Austin. Survivors, his mother, Mary E. Burgman Austin of S.L.C. [Salt Lake City, Utah], two daughters, Marjorie & Ethel of Murray, Utah, two brothers, Ruben & Blaine, both of Soda Springs, three sisters Mrs. Jack Williamson, Mrs. Ray Hughes, Mrs. Gene Hause all of Los Angeles [California]. His wife was Mrs. Zina Austin of Murray, Utah.

RALPH KELLY, former publisher of Soda Springs Chieftain died in the Veterans Hospital in Reno, Nevada abt 20 Aug 1940. His body was taken to Presidio, soldiers cemetery in San Francisco [California] for burial.

MARY BURCHETT, 81, died at LaHarpe, Kansas 19 July 1940. Her husband, a former resident of Soda Springs, died 1933 at LaHarpe, Kansas. Survivors: 4 children, 15 grandchildren, 8 gg children.

CHARLES HAVERCAST died at Blackfoot [Idaho] 18 Aug 1940.

LESTER PETERSON, 25, son of Mr. & Mrs. N. J. Peterson died 18 Sept 1940. he was born 21 July 1915. Survived by his parents, three brothers & one sister, Armond Peterson, Mrs. Norman Matthews, Stanford & Gilbert. Funeral 22 Sept 1940 at Soda Springs

IVAN LINCOLN, 57, of Twin Falls [Idaho] died 19 Sept 1940 at a local hospital. He was born & raised in Grays Lake, Ida. He married Zelphia Stratton 33 yrs ago. Survivors: his wife, a daughter & four sons, Mrs. Laura Puckett, Floyd, Delvin & Dale, Twin Falls, Leslie in U.S. army, also brother (sic) and sisters, W. A. & Richard of Twin Falls, Mrs. Iris Stratton, Conda [Idaho], Jennie, Calif, & these half-brothers & sisters: George Lincoln, Mrs. Dorothy Berry, Mrs. Thelma Roberts. Funeral will be at Twin Falls. Burial?

JOE DEAN NORSTROM, 5 mo old son of Mr. & Mrs. Leon Norstrom died 14 Sept 1940. Funeral 16 Sept at Soda

MATT STOOR of Grays Lake [Idaho] was killed 15 Sept 1940 in a car accident near Pocatello [Idaho]. The body was brought to Soda & funeral 17 Sept 1940 at Soda Springs. He was a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. John Stoor, Sr. [and] was born in Portom, Finland 15 Feb 1890. On June 15 1912 he married Bessie Lewis, who died a few yrs ago leaving her husband and nine children. The children are Budd, Lewis, Robert, Farrell, Betty, John, Max, Wilma & Frank; the following brothers & sisters, John, Gus, & Vern of Soda, Roy & Emil of Grays Lake, Mrs. Hilda Kunz & Mrs. Anna Kunz of Bern [Idaho], Elsa of Calif. Mrs. Edla Whitehead of Bliss [Idaho] & Mrs. Lillian Hopper of Pocatello.

EDGAR ANDRUS died 24 Sept 1940 at his home in Soda. He was born in Oxford, Idaho 9 Oct 1888 to Laron & Rosana Terry Andrus. On April 13. 1913 he married Maud Collins. Survivors, his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Leora Williams & Mrs. Kathryn Peck, two brothers & three sisters, Frank Andrus, Otto Andrus, Rose Jorgensen, Chloe Hunsaker, Maud Dick. Funeral 26 Sept 1940 in L.D.S. Church in Soda.

MRS. FERN MATTHEWS, wife of Mayor S. E. Matthews died 27 Sept 1940 at Soda. Fern Bullock Matthews was born at Provo, Utah 15 Jan 1897 a daughter of Mary Meredith & Ralph A. Bullock. She married Stanley E. Matthews 31 March 1917 at American Falls, Idaho. Survivors: her husband, S. E. Matthews, two daughters Alyce & Joanne and one son Stanley Jr., her mother Mrs. Mary Meredith Bullock, five brothers Ralph A., K. E. (Bob), George A., Bert K., and Reed A. Bullock; four sisters Mrs. Walter Williams, Mrs. Lysle Davis, Mrs. R. N. Whitehead, Mrs. Vance Batty. Funeral Sept. 2 [should be Oct. 2, 1940] at Soda Springs. Burial in Provo, Utah.

MORRIS GRAY DAVIS, a son of William & Josephine Sterrett Davis died 17 Oct 1940 in an auto accident 2 ½ miles north of Idaho Falls [Idaho]. Services held 19 Oct 1940 in Soda. Survivors, his parents, two sisters, Ruth & Betty Jo; three brothers, Keith, Garry & Boyd & his grand parents Mr. & Mrs. S. R. Sterrett.

CHRIS PANTING, 42, died 16 Nov 1940. He was the son of Christopher & Lina Panting. He was born in Soda Springs 17 July 1898. On 25 Nov 1920 he married Grace Giles of Provo, Utah at Paris, Idaho. A daughter & two sons were born to them, Marjorie, Donald & Dale. Surviving besides his widow & children are: two brothers & five sisters, Russell Panting, Dell Panting, Mrs. Frances Hudson, Mrs. Eva Prehn, Mrs. Dara Beus & Mrs. Zella McClellan & Mrs. Rita Burgen. Funeral 19 Nov 1940 at Soda Springs.

MRS. ANNA H. NIELSON, 51, wife of Hans L. Nielson, died Nov 1940. Funeral held 23 Nov 1940 in Logan, Utah. By an earlier marriage she was the mother of Mart & Harlem Larsen of Soda Springs.

MRS. MYRTLE C. HAYWARD of Conda [Idaho] died 10 Dec 1940 in the hospital in Soda. She was born in Arimo, Idaho 20 Aug 1890 a daughter of John & Jennie Davis Horne. While she was a child her mother married Henry Reese & the young girl took the name of Reese instead of Horne. She was married to Garn H. Hayward at Evanston, Wyo. 10 Aug 1921. Survived by her husband, one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Stoor, & two grandchildren, Gary & Jack Stoor, also by a brother, John L. Horne. Funeral 14 Dec 1940 in Soda.

MRS. CARL RINEHART returned from Calif. where she was called by the death of her father, Hempstead H. Smith.

HAROLD PIPER, 19, son of A. J. & Clara Dubach Piper died 17 Dec 1940 from an accident in the Hubbard Sawmill. He was born in Soda Springs, 15 March 1921. Survivors, his stepfather E. C. Schneider, two brothers Leslie Piper & Russell Piper, two half brothers, Wayne Schneider & Leonard Dubach, three uncles, Ezra Dubach, Henry Dubach & George Piper. Burial in Lewisville [Idaho] beside his mother who died in Oct 1937.

DANIEL JOSEPH LAU, 74, died 17 Dec 1940. He was born 17 May 1866 at Providence, Utah, the son of Daniel Frederick & Dorothy Zollinger Lau, natives of Germany & Switzerland. In Oct 1895 he married Sarah May Rose. Six children were born to this union. They are Heber, Clarence, Charles Lau of Soda, Mrs. Dorothy Marriott, & Ruth Lau of Calif., Richard Lau of Conda [Idaho], twelve grandchildren. Mrs. Lau died 12 April 1910. Also surviving are six brothers & sisters, Mrs. Louise Horsley, Joseph E. Lau, Mrs. Rose Torgesen, Arthur Lau, Mrs. Ann Dimmick, Mrs. Minnie Rose.

Mrs. Adeline Horsley Spencer, wife of George Spencer of Paris, and sister of T.W. Horsley, Mrs. Laura Lau, and Mrs. Mayme Miles of Soda Springs, died at the family home in Paris on Tuesday, April 20. She had been an invalid for over 20 years.

A daughter of the late Thomas W. and Sophia Edghill Horsley, her early childhood was spent in Soda Springs. She was a graduate of the old LDS college in Salt Lake City, and an accomplished musician. As a member of the world-famous Tabernacle Choir, she made a trip to the world’s fair in Chicago. In 1893 In Paris she served 25 years as organist. She also taught music. In 1900 she was married to George Spencer in the Salt Lake Temple. She was the mother of nine children, six of whom, in addition to her husband, survive: Lucile Spencer and Mrs. Alice B. Christensen of Provo, Utah, Albert Spencer of Salt Lake City, T. Horsley and John W. Spencer and Mrs. Leonora Stucki of Paris.

CHARLES STEADMAN, 83, died a t his home in West Jordan [Utah] 22 April 1943. He was born at Woodside, England 2 Dec 1859. He married Fannie M. Wardle of W. Jordan 6 March 1889 in Logan Temple. She died in March 1920. In Dec 1922 he married Mrs. Alice Ongley Kirk in Salt Lake Temple. She died in Jan. 1933. Survivors: four sons, Wilford Steadman, William Clifford, James R. and Herbert H. MAYOR GEORGE C. ADAMS killed in a plane crash in Arizona 2 Sept 1943. Mayor Adams was the husband of Louise Largilliere, dau of E. W. Largilliere of Soda. SGT. JAMES H. HILL was killed in action 29 March 1944 in the South Pacific. Sgt. Hill and Alice Blackburn were married in Oct [1943]. When he sailed in Dec. she returned to Soda to live with her grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Blackburn awaiting his return. He was a native of Wilkensburg, Pennsylvania. Surviving his wife, his mother, Mrs. M. J. Hill, a sister, Mrs. Betsy Kagarise & two brothers Tom and Shields.

PRIVATE VERLIN HAYES, son of Adelbert Hayes & Vera Skinner Hayes, was killed 31 March 1944 at Camp Polk, Louisiana, by accidental discharge of gun. Services held in Georgetown [Idaho] 6 April 1944. Then the body was brought to Soda Springs for burial beside his father. He was born 11 Nov 1922 in Georgetown, Idaho. Survived by his mother, his sister, Mrs. Ialeen Lewis & a brother, Clinton Hayes & Staff Sergeant Russell Hayes, now a prisoner of war in Germany, W. J. WILLIS SWENSON, of Lago [Idaho] was killed 9 April 1944 by an accident on the ranch he operated for his uncle James Swenson. He was born at Lago 24 Sept 1906 to Joseph & Regina Christensen Swenson. He was born in Clifton, Idaho 18 Nov 1879 to William & Eliza Packer Davis. 2 April 1910 he married Celia Gunnell in Logan Temple. Survivors – his widow & two daughters, Mrs. Florence Rigby, Mrs. Alta Swett. A son Ervin died 29 Aug 1929.He (sic) father, mother & all his brothers & sisters preceeded (sic) him in death.

CHRIS J. JOHNSON, son of Mr. & Mrs. J. H. Johnson of Bancroft [Idaho] was killed in action in France 14 June 1944. He was born 4 Sept 1918 at Bancroft.

DOROTHY THOMPSON, eight yr old dau of Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Thompson died July 1944. Funeral 5 July 1944 in Conda [Idaho].

FRANCIS MARION WILSON, 83, died 6 July 1944, a native of Iowa. Survivors, Elmer S. Wilson, Ernest Wilson, Everett Wilson, Eldon Wilson, Leo Wilson, a daughter and two sons by an earlier marriage. Burial services 10 July 1944 in Soda, Burial in Fairview Cemetery in Soda.

SGT. HARRISON CROWELL was killed in action over Germany 13 June 1944. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Harris (sic) (Harrison) Crowell. He was born 13 Sept 1923. He married Loretta Cornelison of Chesterfield [Idaho] 4 May 1944 at Briggs Field, Texas. Survivors, his widow & parents, one sister, two brothers, LaTrese, Ellwood & Rutherford B. Crowell.

ALFRED ROSEN, 81, of Paris, Idaho died 26 July 1944 at his home. He is the father of Mrs. Henry Bolton of Soda. Born in Switzerland 20 Feb 1863. 6 June 1886 he married Rosina Hoffman in Logan Temple. Survived by widow and 11 children. Funeral 29 July 1944 at Bear Lake Stake Tabernacle.

DEAN A. WOODALL died 3 Aug 1944 in Logan [Utah], 64 yrs old. He was born in Missouri 13 Nov 1879 a son of Christopher T. and Ellen Doyle Woodall. WILLIAM SAMUEL BEARDSLEY died at his home in Soda 4 Aug 1944. He was born in Red Oak, Iowa 27 Aug 1875 to [No information shown]. 8 Jan 1929 he married Ethelen Simmerman at Gering, Nebraska. His wife & three step children survive; Frank, Carence (sic?) & Mrs. Helen Irene Reese. Funeral 7 Aug 1944 in Soda. Burial in Soda. Mrs. Beardsley is a sister of Mrs. Laura Hopkins. They [the sisters] had been separated for 48 yrs.

OLEF NICHOLAS SWANSON died 4 Aug 1944 in Soda. Services 6 Aug 1944 in Soda. Burial in Soda. Grave dedicated by Earl Gunnell. He was born in Shane, Sweden 17 June 1871, a son of Hannah & Swan Nichlarsen. He was one of seven children, two of whom are living in the U.S. A sister, Mrs. Anna Nelson & a brother Peter Swanson.

MRS. ZINA HANDY RICE, 37, wife of Bacil E. Rice & mother of three children, died 8 Aug 1944 [in Soda]. She was born in Grace [Idaho] 14 Nov 1906, a daughter of Samuel & Lydia Bybee Handy. 30 Oct 1925 she married Bacil E. Rice at Paris, Idaho. Lallatin was born 1 Dec 1870 at Neuffen, Germany to [Mr. & Mrs. Anton Lallatin]. On March 10 1897 he married Emmeline Cranney in the Logan Temple. Survivors, his wife Emmeline, sons, Anton, Frank, Duane; daughters – Loretta, Mrs. Harriet Coy, Mrs. Florency Mayer, Mrs. Rose Casto, Mrs. Alice Folk; five sisters, Mrs. R.M. Conner, Mrs. Frank McCain, two brothers, Chris & Joe Lallatin. He was preceeded (sic) by two daughters & one son, Elizabeth, LaRue & Fred.

JOSEPH H. JOHNSON, 58, Bancroft [Idaho] died 14 Sept 1944 on his farm. He was born 21 Dec 1886 in Logan, Utah, a son of Chris & Christina Jeppson Johnson. He married Lureeta Banks, 15 June 1907 in the Logan Temple. A son, Chris J. Johnson was killed in action in France 14 June 1944. Surviving – his widow, seven sons & daughters, J. Lewis Johnson, W. F. Johnson, Mrs. Hilva J. Christensen, Mrs. Norma J. Nelson, Mrs. Lorraine Hobbs, Albert F. and Lars D. Johnson, four sisters & brothers, Mrs. Delmar Tate, Hans B. Johnson, Mrs. Marshall Allan, Harold L. Johnson. Funeral in Bancroft 18 Sept 1944; burial in Logan [Utah] City Cemetery.

DR. GEORGE G. FITZ, 73, Bancroft, Ida died in S.L. City [Utah] 25 Sept 1944. Survived by his widow, Mrs. May Thatcher Fitz, a son Herbert G. Fitz – three sisters, Mary Fitz, Mrs. Anna Burns, Mrs. Catherin (sic) Anderson; two brothers, Dr. J. H. Fit z, Dave Fitz. Funeral 27 Sept & burial in Boise [Idaho].

WALTER E. REED died Oct 1944. Funeral held 10 Oct 1944 in Bancroft [Idaho]. Burial in Bancroft. Present at funeral were two of the brothers, Emery Reed & Roy Reed. Emery & Roy had not seen Clifford & Walter for 47 years. Other relatives were Marie Evans, Mr. & Mrs. Dick Guipre, Mrs. & Mrs. Diggs Lewis.

STERLING JAY NIELSEN was killed in a plane crash in the South Pacific, 7 Oct 1944. He was born in Alexander, Ida 22 March 1925, a son of Ben & Carrie Olsen Nielsen. Survivors, his mother, two brothers, Raymond & Ferrell Nielsen; three sisters, Mrs. Erma Pickering, Norma & Melba Nielsen. He (sic) father & two brothers Homer & Orland preceeded (sic) him in death.

PFC GEORGE MORGAN STOCKING, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Angus Stocking of Malad [Idaho] was killed in action in the South Pacific 4 Oct 1944. He was born in Malad 28 Aug 1925. Survivors, his parents, a brother, Dr. R. A. Stocking, four sisters, Mrs. Hannah E. Smart, Mrs. Mary Barkdull, Mrs. Lydia Piscevick, Miss Loraine Stocking.

ALAMEDA A. SIBBETT, 91, died 28 Oct 1944 at her home in Grays Lake [Idaho]. Funeral services 31 Oct 1944 at Grays Lake. Survived by six children – Mrs. LaBell H. Rose, Mrs. Amanda A. Lincoln, Mrs. Della Wakeman, Mrs. Dulcie Corbett, Sam Sibbett, Earl Sibbett. Alameda Simmons Sibbett was born 8 Sept 1853 in San Barnardino (sic), Calif. to Mary and William Simmons. She married James L. Sibbett 24 Dec 1871. To this union were born 12 children, six preceeded (sic) in death. James L. Sibbett died on his 70th birthday – 22 June 1922.

JOHN FRANKLIN SHILLINGER died 26 Oct 1944 in Soda. Funeral services 30 Oct 1944 in Soda. Burial in the Fairview Cemetery in Soda. He was born in New Mexico 25 June 1870. 4 June 1919 he married Jennie Woodard in Pocatello [Idaho]. Survivors – his widow, one son Warren, one daughter, Mrs. Birdell Caldwell, one step son Charles e. Woodard; a brother George Shillinger & a sister Mary, & Mrs. s. Caroline Decker.

MRS. JOHN HUNTER of Lund, Ida died Nov 1944. Funeral 8 Nov 1944. Burial in Lund Cemetery. She was born in Sweden 21 Sept 1873. She married John Hunter 27 April 1892. Survived by four sons, Archie A., Melvin F., Eugene & Wilford.

HOWARD GUMMERSALL, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Gummersall, killed in action 20 Nov 1944 off Cape Henry, Virginia.

ALMA HOGAN, 82, died 28 Nov 1944 at the Caribou County Hospital in Soda. He was born at Bountiful, Utah 2 Aug 1862 and in 1892 he married Rachael Johnson in Logan Temple. Survived by 5 living children, Mrs. Ira Spidell, A. Nelson Hogan, Elva Schenk, LeRoy Hogan, Mrs. Raymond Mickelsen. His wife and 2 children preceeded (sic) in death. Funeral 2 Dec 1944 in Bancroft [Idaho].

IRA SPIDELL died 3 Dec 1944 at Lava Hot Springs [Idaho]. His widow Mrs. Myrtle Spidell is a daughter of Alma Hogan. He was born at Riverdale [Idaho] 14 Sept 1881 to Frank & Mary Davis Spidell. He married Sylvia Hunt in 1905; she died 1914. In 1929 he married Myrtle Hogan Grant. Funeral in Downey [Idaho] chapel. Survivors – his widow, a son & daughter, Frank Spidell, Mrs. A. E. Duke, two step daughters, Mrs. Neil Williams, Mrs. Varrell Lewis, a brother & two sisters, Ruben Spidell, Mrs. Minnie Dewitt, Mrs. Bessie Phillips.

MRS. FRIEDA HINSELMAN STAATS, widow of the late John Staats, died 8 Dec 1944. She was born in Germany, near Hamburg, in 1870. She moved to England [and] while there was married to Frank Kassel in 1896. After his death she went to Panama to live with a brother. While there she married Mr. Staats 8 May 1908. Survivors, a daughter Mrs. Annie Kassel Gill, wife of Clyde Gill. Funeral 12 Dec 1944 in Soda.

GLEN L. PERKINS was killed in action 22 Dec 1944 in Germany. He is the son of Mrs. & Mrs. Ira Perkins, born 2 June 1925. He married Lois Bybee 25 Sept 1943. Survivors, his wife Lois Bybee (Perkins), his parents, three sisters, Darlene & Mrs. Joe Dyer, Mrs. Howard Ellis, one brother, Delvin Perkins.

MRS. LAURA LAU, 71, wife of Joseph E. Lau died 23 Dec 1944. Her parents were Thomas W. & Sophia Edghill Horsley. 26 June 1890 she married Mr. Lau in the Logan Temple. She was 17 yrs old then. She was the mother of 8 children, three of whom died in infancy. Surviving, a son J. Cyril Lau, and four daughters, Mrs. Rita Gorton, Mrs. Winifred Phelps, Mrs. Mayme Richards, Mrs. Esther Wallace, a brother & two sisters, Thomas W. Horsley & Mrs. Amy Miles, Mrs. Amelia Rose. Funeral 26 Dec 1944; burial in Soda.

“GRANDMA RUGER”, Catherine Willie Ruger, 88, died Dec 1944. Funeral services 27 Dec 1944 in Bancroft [Idaho]. Burial in Chesterfield [Idaho] Cemetery. Catherine Willie Ruger was born in Switzerland. She married Adrian Ruger in April 1883. Her husband died 1902 and a daughter Nettie Hogan in 1934. Survivors are Eugene Ruger, Arthur Ruger & Annie Call.

RICHARD CARROLL TORGENSEN, 10 yr old son of Richard & Arlene Tucker Torgensen died Christmas night 1944. He was born 6 April 1934 in Soda. Survivors, his parents, a brother & two sisters, Robert Keith, Karen & Susan, his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. J. L. Torgensen & Mr. & Mrs. C. P. Tucker. Funeral held 28 Dec 1944 in Soda, Burial in Fairview Cemetery.

HYRUM LARSEN, 75, died 26 Dec 1944 in Soda. He was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah 24 July 1869. Abt 1887 he married Elizabeth Rands in the S. L. Temple. 8 children were born to this union. Survivors: Sarah Sorensen, Mabel Thompson, Myrtle Tippets, Sidney Larsen, Kenneth & Lyman Larsen, Melvin & Naomi Snyder. After his first wife’s death he married Armenta Borrowman. She & two children survive – Darrell Larsen, Howard Larsen; a sister, Mary Winschell. Funeral 29 Dec; burial in Georgetown [Idaho] Cemetery.
